Santa Clara, California
Community Housing Programs in Santa Clara, California have
improved the access of middle- and low-income residents to affordable housing.
Cooperating stakeholders including government, school districts, local industry,
and nonprofit organizations, came together to meet the housing needs of the
poor, homeless, and disabled. The controversial decision of how to use state
surplus property brought together grassroots community groups to create a
community solution. The land now contains the corporate headquarters of a
company, restored historical buildings, open space, and a new day care facility
and shelter for homeless families. Fifteen local teenagers voiced concern
to the City Youth Commission over the lack of a place to skate. Cooperation
with the City Council, the Parks Department, and a local school district led
to a new Youth Skate Park.
