Howard County, Maryland
The Aging in Place initiative provides senior citizens
of Howard County, Maryland specific, coordinated services that allow them
to remain living in their homes throughout their lifetime. Central to this
initiative is the belief that older adults are a vital force in the community
and that their civic involvement enriches the quality of life for all citizens.
The only free health clinic in Howard County, the Health Alliance
for Patients in Need operates with volunteer doctors, nurses, and
interpreters that provide needed medical help to uninsured citizens. Working
in donated space, all patients are helped or referred to specialists, laboratories
and surgeons free of charge. Run solely by students, the Wild Times
CafÈ was formed as a safe gathering place for teens by a nonprofit
organization, Project Teen-Safe, Inc. The CafÈ offers an alternative to drugs,
alcohol, and crime by promoting a positive image for youth, providing a location
for numerous indoor activities, and focusing on student talent.
