Montevideo, Minnesota
The need for a new Senior Center in Montevideo, Minnesota was met with great
opposition from voters. Frustrated seniors relied on the help of business
people, educators, civic leaders and others to perform a concerted lobbying
effort. The result was not only a new senior center, but a center sufficient
to serve the entire community. After a 100-year flood, the Smith Addition,
a low-lying neighborhood, launched a major housing initiative to rebuild or
replace homes damaged by the flood. This effort encouraged the city to prepare
other neighborhoods and revise city planning to mitigate the impact of future
floods. The Alternative Learning Center developed a partnership
with the community to challenge community groups and youth to generate solutions
to community problems. Projects have included a new skateboard park, building
sheds, conducting flood studies, and planting trees.
