Greater Syracuse, New York
The Neighborhood Leadership Program of Greater Syracuse,
New York is a grassroots approach to develop neighborhood pride and address
neighborhood issues. Each neighborhood sends two representatives to an annual
12-week training program emphasizing group process skills, motivation techniques,
and grant writing. At the end of each training program, $13,000 is allocated
by those attending to support select community-based projects. Forging
Our Communitys United Strength (F.O.C.U.S) is a community-wide
visioning project. After gathering ideas from residents, 87 goals were translated
and presented at a Vision Fair where they were prioritized through
public citizen voting. The Greater Syracuse University Literacy Corps
stems from President Clintons America Reads Challenge that urged community
members to become involved in mentoring and tutoring young children. Over
120 students from the University now participate at over 20 sites.
