Irving, Texas
To address the social service needs of Hispanics and other immigrants, Irving,
Texas has created the Community Resource Bank (Banco de Recursos Comunitarios).
Many social services have come together in a once vacant bank building so
community members in need can access necessary social services without traveling
great distances. Crossroads Interfaith Housing is a long-term
transitional housing program for homeless families designed to break them
from the poverty/welfare cycle. Offering living skills, budgeting, parenting
and goal setting classes (all mandatory), in addition to vocational training,
the program motivates residents to become self-reliant and productive citizens.
The 21st Century Community Learning Centers provide after-school,
weekend, and summer programs to meet various needs of students, parents, and
community members. Students are able to learn new hobbies and get academic
tutoring in a positive and constructive environment. Parents knowledge
and skills are also increased as they become involved in their childs
education process.
