Port Arthur, Texas
Lamar-Port Arthurs Training and Retraining Initiatives
encompass multiple partnerships to design and maintain a curriculum at the
Lamar State College-Port Arthur to provide needed educational skills for people
trying to find or hold a job in Port Arthur, Texas. Working to meet future
employment needs, the College develops their programs through local employment
trend forecasts and business and industry advisory committees. The program
also prepares high school students for the workforce with the opportunity
to receive college credit before graduation. The Port Arthur Neighborhood
Action Council serves as an umbrella group for the individual efforts
of neighborhood programs to reduce crime. The Council serves as a clearinghouse
for information and aids neighborhoods in their work to maintain a safe community
and a high quality of life. The Help One Student To Succeed Program
(HOSTS) was first developed to help elementary students with reading. Because
of its success, HOSTS has extended its academic reach with the HOSTS Math
Program, designed to raise test sores on the Texas Assessment of Academic
Skills for secondary students. Operating through mentors, the program provides
not only academic support but also a relationship on which the students can
depend.
