Weslaco, Texas

The Weslaco Self-Help Initiative is tackling inadequate water and sewage service to area neighborhoods, as a result doctors report a positive impact on the general health of the residents of the first neighborhood to benefit from this project. Keep Caldwell Operating centered around the an effort to keep Caldwell, a company that makes venetian-blind components, operating without posing a health threat to the neighborhood, as well as to help the South Texas Community College expand in Weslaco. Project Read, a joint effort of the Weslaco Independent School District and the Weslaco Public Library, restructured the children's summer reading program into a family reading program; each year hundreds of parents, teens and children participate in reading and library activities designed to increase interest in reading.
