Parsons, Kansas
Kansas Parson's Downtown Revitalization Project, inclusive of both
Public and Private Sector Improvements, includes construction of a new street
complete with historically appropriate streetlights, street signs, herringbone
brick pavers, trees, parking and landscaping as well as a new restaurant and
crafts store on a vacant building site resulting from a tornado. In efforts
to Rebuild the City's Lower Income Housing Stock, the community pulled
together to create an innovative housing program which would develop fifty-seven
new housing units; thirty-three new single-family homes and twenty-four apartment
units. Youth Program Enhancements began in May of 1998 when the City
purchased a building that formerly housed a Catholic school and converted
the facility into a community center with a mission to increase services to
Parsons Youth. Acquisition of the building allowed the community to provide
new services including: YouthFriends, an organization that provides mentoring
to atrisk youth in a public school setting, and the Tiny Tots PreSchool, established
to give disadvantaged youth a head start before entering the public school
system.
