Chester, South Carolina
The Chester County YMCA provides a place for all to participate in programs
designed to maintain or improve one's health and wellness. The youth of Chester
County can now join in year-round activities, allowing these young people to
find positive ways in socializing within their community. The McAliley Apartments,
formerly the 35,000 square foot Hotel Chester, was renovated to create 22 multi-family
housing units for low to moderate-income families and four retail spaces. The
project involved restoration and preservation of a historical property through
innovative and collaborative means. The Chester County First Steps Partnership
involves combining the resources of libraries, businesses, the school district
and government to identify children at risk of not being prepared for the structured
leaming environment, and assisting through parent education and other means
where necessary. Through providing necessary resources, the program empowers
parents and early childhood educators to prepare children to begin school healthy,
and ready to learn.
