From June 21 to 23, 2001, a contingent of more than 50 residents, business
people, government and community members was in Atlanta, Georgia, representing
Huntington in the All America City Award competition. Sponsored by the
National Civic League and Allstate Insurance Company, the All America
City award recognizes communities in which citizens, government, business
and non-profit organizations demonstrate successful resolution of critical
community issues.
Team
Huntington was put together in just weeks after the announcement by
competition sponsors that Huntington was among 30 communities from across
the nation selected as finalists for the prestigious award. The Town
of Huntington was the first Long Island community to reach the finals
in nearly 50 years.
Under the leadership of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce
and Town of Huntington, team Huntington presented a compelling case
to the judges. They described how three innovative projects - the Dolan
Family Health Center, Huntington Station Enrichment Center and Tri-Community
Youth Agency were formed to solve problems and improve the lives of
community residents.
The Team did Huntington proud, describing for the jurists a community
of economic and racial diversity, and telling how the town's citizens,
government leaders, business and non-profit communities have come together
to solve problems resulting from that diversity.
In the end, Huntington was not among the winners of the All America
City Award, but the road to the finals - the story of Huntington rising
to meet social challenges - is story worth telling. Equally compelling
is the story of how a group of community members representing the full
diversity of the town's social and economic makeup came together and
formed a team.
Long Islander Newspapers was in Atlanta with the team. We are proud
to present "Huntington - An All America Town," so that all
of our readers can share the excitement, the pride and enlightenment
that members of Team Huntington gained through their experience.
