DENVER - May 8, 2001 - The National Civic League released today a report entitled "Bridging the Gap Between Citizens and Local Government with Information Technology: Concepts and Case Studies". The report examines the important roles of civic engagement and public deliberation in government, democracy and politics. "Bridging the Gap" provides detailed case studies of how information technology is currently being used to develop new practices that enhance communication and understanding between citizens and their local government. In addition to the Internet, the report examines how cities across the country are using other advanced technologies such as geographical information systems, global positioning systems, handheld computers and digital cameras. From Tacoma, Washington, to Worchester, Massachusetts, information technologies are making it easier for citizens to become active and engaged by collecting and disseminating information about their existing physical and social infrastructure. By facilitating the ability for governments to hear and respond to this information, citizens are enhancing their civic networks and thereby the strength and health of their communities. The report was made possible by the generous support of the Ford Foundation. "Bridging the Gap Between Citizens and Local Government with Information Technology: Concepts and Case Studies" is available for $7.00 and can be purchased through the NCL web store at http://www.nationalcivicleague.org/, by calling (303) 571-4343 or by fax at (303) 571-4404. The National Civic League is a 109-year-old non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to strengthening citizen democracy by transforming democratic institutions. NCL accomplishes its mission through technical assistance, training, publishing, research, and the All-America City Award. The National Civic League is headquartered in Denver, Colorado, and has an office in Washington, D.C. For more information, call 303-571-4343 or visit www.ncl.org. # # # |
