Colorado Conversations 2002: March 14
With a diverse group of Denver regional leaders in attendance, Colorado
Conversations' first program series was a success! Christopher T. Gates
delivered a keynote address titled, "A New Model of Community Democracy"
and challenged the leaders of Denver to discuss how it relates to the
quality of
Denver's civic participation and community decision-making, citizen
engagement and whether or not people think their opinions matter.
Christopher T. Gates, the President of the National Civic League, stated
that the word apathetic has become a popular adjective to describe today's
citizens. Low voter turnout and limited attendance at public hearings
are often offered by community leaders as examples of apathy. Gates
argued that citizens aren't apathetic. They are frustrated and angry.
Citizens care a great deal about their communities, but feel their participation
in the overall governance of their communities simply doesn't matter.
Gates
introduced a "A New Model of Community Democracy" which is
comprised of collaborative efforts between government, businesses, non-profits
and citizens. For businesses, government, non-profits and citizens to
work together effectively, civic or safe space must be created. Civic
spaces are places where individuals with diverse perspectives are brought
together by leaders to resolve differences and develop strategies to
address complex issues. He challenged the leaders of Denver attending
Colorado Conversations to begin thinking about these issues and how
Denver can come together as a healthier community.
To further expand on the Denver Region's critical issues and how to
begin addressing each in a collaborative and effective way, Arturo Vargas,
the President of the National Association of Latino Elected Officials,
will speak at the second Colorado Conversation session on Thursday,
March 28th. He will be addressing the topic of "Can Political Power
Really Be Shared?"
