Citizen Driven Performance Measurement
Many jurisdictions are currently measuring for performance of the services
delivered in their community. However, few jurisdictions employ methods
that ensure the areas and issues being measured are truly meaningful
to citizens. Furthermore, very few local government entities share performance
measurement information with the broader community in such a way that
it could involve citizens to create positive change. By identifying
and measuring these meaningful areas on an ongoing basis, local government
can be certain that their resources and attention are focused in targeted
and strategic areas that are important to citizens. Jurisdictions that
listen and respond to their community and constantly strive for excellence
are more likely to be viewed as credible and responsive by their constituents.
National Civic League assists local governments and/or citizen groups
to enhance and develop performance measures that are meaningful through
a collaborative community process. Citizen efforts are achieved driven
through "Citizen Impact," a collaborative process designed
to assist with local issues, development of meaningful measures and
working to ensure that local government adequately responds. Government
driven efforts are achieved through community participation efforts
in designing, implementing, and measuring strategic areas of interest.
