Instructions

  1. Click on the link above to open the chat room in a new window.

  2. Please enter your first name and organization in the "nickname" box. Spaces are not allowed, and your name may be shortened (sorry). For example:
    • Jim_NewYork
    • Lucy_Chicago
  3. Click "login" and you will enter the chat room.

  4. To send a message, type it in the bottom box, and hit the enter key.
  5. To log out, click on the "x" in the top-right corner of the screen twice (you will be prompted on the second click - say "ok").

  6. Make sure that #ncl is highlighted when you want to chat. It is possible to be in other screens, but you will not be able to participate in the chat except when you are in the #ncl "room".

  7. You may log back in at any time, if you lose your connection.
  8. Please do not use the back, forward, refresh, or stop buttons on your browser while you are in the chat room. If it appears that you are no longer receiving messages, close the chat room, click on the link at the top of this page, and start over.

Requirements

  • You must use a modern web browser - Netscape, Opera, or Internet Explorer version 5+. Internet Explorer is recommended in this case.
  • Your network firewall must allow outbound port 8080.

Troubleshooting

  • If you are unable to see the log in screen:
    • It is possible that your firewall doesn't allow access to port 8080 (see requirements). Talk to your network admin.
  • If you are able to log in, but you don't see any messages:
    • Make sure you are using a web browser compatible with the requirements.
    • Make sure that you have javascript enabled in your browser.
    • Make sure that you haven't pressed "back", "forward", "stop", or "refresh" in your browser while trying to connect. If you have, try starting over.
    • If you are sure that the above issues do not apply, please log out, and try again. If it still doesn't work, please see the contact information below.
  • If it was working, but you've stopped seeing messages:
    • Make sure #ncl is highlighted at the top of the screen.
  • Other issues, or the above advice doesn't work:
    • If your browser is simply out of date, and you'd rather use a java chat interface, please go here. This feature is not supported by NCL, but it may help users with older computers to join the chat.
    • Contact NCL's webmaster at 303-571-4343. He will try to help you through your problem.
