New Politics Program Projects
When the New Politics Program was first established in 1997, its first undertaking
was to study the existence of local campaign finance reform efforts throughout
the country. Made possible by a grant from the Ford Foundation, this project
was a direct outcome of then NCL Chair, Honorable Bill Bradleys desire
to consolidate our organizations historical focus on recognizing and
promoting political reform efforts at the local level. A study of local campaign
finance reform was seen as a prime vehicle for fulfilling this goal.
The National Civic League and the Institute for Global Ethics recently published,
"Clean Campaigns: How to Promote Candidate Codes of Conduct." The
report, released as a field guide, was written to help those interested in
clean and positive campaigns motivate their candidates to voluntarily sign
codes of conduct and pledge to refrain from negative, attack based campaigning.
The National Civic League's New Politics Program has released a report entitled
"Bridging the Gap Between Citizens and Local Government with Information
Technology: Concepts and Case Studies." This report examines how high
technology has affected civic engagement on the local government and community
level.
Code of Ethics
The New Politics Program is in the process of creating a report concerning
codes of ethics for local governments. We are conducting our research by examining
the provisions of various local governments' codes of ethics, and also by
tracking the progress and experiences of a few specific cities that have recently
implemented a code of ethics. The report will be released some time in 2002.
If you have any questions related to the report, or have been involved with
a code of ethics in your community and are interested in sharing your experiences,
please contact Derek Okubo (303) 571-4343.
