Student Voices |
|
The Spring Semester brought continued success for the 2002-2003
Denver Student Voices Project. Denver Student Voices is part of
the National Student Voices Project, an initiative of the Annenberg
Public Policy Center. The National Student Voices Project is supporting
local civic education projects in 22 cities throughout the country.
Denver high school students researched various important issues
in the community and in the campaign throughout the semester. Many
students interacted with the candidates during classroom visits
to discuss ideas and debate potential solutions. The Denver Student
Voices Web site also was an important resource for their research
as the students discussed amongst themselves and with the candidates
the various issues of the campaign. Tuesday, March 4, offered a
unique and exciting opportunity as 1,200 high school students attended
the Denver Student Voices Mayoral Candidates Forum at the University
of Denver's Ritchie Center. All nine candidates participated in
the forum. To complete the semester, the students participated in
a Civics Fair where they displayed projects that demonstrated what
they had learned about local government and making their voices
heard. Cash prizes totaling $20,000 were given to the schools for
award-winning projects.

Student Voices Looks Forward to Fall Semester |
|

Due to the resounding success of Denver Student Voices in
2002-2003, the project was renewed by the Annenberg Foundation
for a second school year. In 2003-2004, Student Voices will
be back in 10 Denver public high schools:
|
- Abraham Lincoln High School
- Career Education Center
- Contemporary Learning Center
- Denver School of the Arts
- East High School
- John F. Kennedy
- Manual
- Montbello
- South High School
- Thomas Jefferson.
|
| With the mayoral and city council campaigns decided, students
will now focus on how Denver's newly elected city officials
address the issues that are of concern to them and their communities.
