Federal Community Partnerships |

NCLs
Federal-Community Partnerships program recently welcomed two new
staff members. The FCP Project Director, Karen Labat, comes to NCL
from Denver, Colorado, having been Director of Regional Projects
and Training for the National Civilian Community Corps of the AmeriCorps
program. She brings a strong set of skills and fifteen years of
experience working with a variety of communities and stakeholders.
Karen brings a positive, energetic, and focused approach to her
work and we are certain that all of you will enjoy working with
her.
Carolyn Abdullah is joining us as the new Assistant Project Director
for Federal-Community Partnerships, and the Training and Technical
Assistance Coordinator for Safe Kids/Safe Streets. Carolyn comes
to us from having coordinated T&TA for the Friends National
Resource Center, Community Based Family Resource and Support Program
from DHHS. She has fifteen years of experience working on a variety
of children's issues and violence prevention, and is excellent at
working with diverse communities. Carolyn brings an optimistic and
thoughtful attitude and we are sure that she will be a great asset
to our work.
The two major projects under FCP are Safe Start and Safe Kids/Safe
Streets.
The FCP staff has been busy planning the Fall 2003 Cross-Site Meeting,
to be held in Sitka, Alaska, September 10-12, 2003. This meeting
brings together all of the communities participating in the Safe
Start initiative, as well as the evaluators' technical assistance
providers. This Sitka meeting is focused on domestic violence and
childrens exposure to violence, and will entail rich discussions
from those working in the field and experts presenting on models
of service integration and systems change. The FCP staff has also
been working to put together a peer-to-peer meeting in Huntsville,
Alabama this Fall on unified financing strategies for the Safe Kids/Safe
Streets sites. Unified financing encompasses the fiscal side of
systems reform efforts to make funding streams in communities more
flexible so that services can be provided more effectively to improve
outcomes for children, youth, and families. This meeting will include
presenters from successful unified financing models, such as the
Milwaukee Wraparound project, to lead the discussion.
