MetLife Foundation
Ambassadors in Education Award |
National Award
Program Will Recognize Teachers With $5,000 Grants
Nominations Due By March 31
Do you know a teacher who is an outstanding citizen in your
community? If so, nominate that person for the MetLife Foundation
Ambassadors in Education Award and help that teacher's school
earn $5,000.
The award recognizes middle school and high school teachers
in select public school systems who are working to strengthen
their schools and their surrounding communities. Students, parents,
educators and community members are encouraged to nominate teachers
who are making an impact beyond their school for the betterment
of the entire community.
"Teachers are key to establishing a culture of caring
and community involvement in their schools," said Sibyl
Jacobson, MetLife Foundation president and CEO. "Their
leadership in reaching out to their students' neighborhoods
sets an important example for all citizens, including students,
parents, and school staff."
The MetLife Foundation Ambassadors in Education Award program
is providing positive recognition to teachers to encourage
leading educators to continue their efforts, while inspiring
others to follow their examples. The program encourages community
members, students, parents, and business leaders to join together
to nominate extraordinary teachers in their community.
The MetLife Foundation Ambassadors in Education program is
now accepting nominations for outstanding teachers in the
following cities:
· Atlanta
· Baltimore
· Boston
· Charlotte
· Chicago
· Dallas
· Dayton
· Denver
· Des Moines
· Detroit
· Fort Worth
· Greenville
· Hartford
· Long Beach
· Los Angeles
· Minneapolis
· New York City
· Oakland
· Philadelphia
· San Antonio
· San Francisco
· St. Louis
· Tampa
· Tulsa
· Washington, D.C.
The deadline for submitting your nomination is March 31. A
national selection committee will review the nominations and
select the winning teacher for each participating district.
MetLife Foundation and the National Civic League will announce
the winners by April 15, 2005 and will present the grants at
local award ceremonies shortly thereafter.
The award is sponsored by MetLife Foundation, which was founded
in 1976 by MetLife and supports programs that increase opportunities
for young people to succeed, give students and teachers a
voice in improving education, develop partnerships between
schools and communities and strengthen relationships among
parents, teachers and students.
In 2002, the MetLife Survey of the American Teacher revealed
a disconnect between many educators and their communities -
especially those in inner city schools. For example:
· Only nine percent of students believe their teachers
know enough about the communities where they teach.
· About 55 percent of the teachers in communities of
color admit they don't know much about the community surrounding
their school.
MetLife Foundation and the National Civic League started the
Ambassadors in Education Award program in 2003 to help reverse
these alarming trends within our educational systems. For more

Montrose, Colorado is in the initial stages of a visioning
and strategic planning process. The community project originated
with the City of Montrose, and they have recently handed
the project off to the Initiating Committee, made up of
diverse leaders in the community. The community and local
media is excited about the project.
The City and County of Broomfield, Colorado has hired the
National Civic League for another consulting project. During
this project, NCL will help Broomfield update its Strategic
Plan and develop its Master Plan. The city is planning an
extensive outreach to the community to solicit input and
feedback.
In 1997, NCL worked with what was then the City of Broomfield
on a similar effort that resulted in the creation of a new
county seat making Broomfield Colorados second
city and county municipality, which represented the first
such change to the state map in 94 years.
